I need some help on selecting a cheap(under £100) digital camera,i just want something to take hol.snaps with,it has to be said that i know b****r all about cameras,so laymans terms please.

Ok, first point: Don't buy an Olympus camera. Ever.

Next: if you only want to take holiday snaps, etc, with it, as opposed to fancy stuff, go for something with around 2-4Megapixels (don't worry if you don't know what that means, it's just that every digital camera has a pixel rating, and the higher this rating, the bigger the picture and better quality it is. To be honest, you get good enough pictures with 2Megapixels, my camera has that many, and that's a fairly low rating these days.)

I would recommend trying out a few cameras if you can, assuming you get one from a shop as opposed to ordering from the net, get someone who works in the shop to show you how good it is. If you buy online, check that the camera has been reviewed. David (Proud Salopian) knows a good review site for cameras, I can't remember the web address of it.

Happy snapping!

I'll second that!

I'll also try and find that good review site that helped me find my newest camera (after my second Olympus camera broke... )

Okay, here it is:

http://www.cameras.co.uk

It also gives you the prices of the cameras from just about every online store, so you can find the cheapest deal.

It is considered that 5 mega pixel be the minimum but anything 3 mega pixel upwards can do a good job. some of my best pictures were taken with a 3 mp fuji although now I tend to use my 8mp canon slr or my 2mp sony ericsson camera phone both producting good results.

Fuji are not bad and a Canon or Nikon compact can be picked up for about about £100. It is worth checking out online prices as you can get a good deal.

Several Cemera magazines rate compact cameras so it might be worth getting an issue of Digital Camera Magazine and seeing what is well rated in your price range.

I have an ancient (2002) 2.1MP Nikon Coolpix, and it still works fine. The pictures are good, and the main thing is they are small, only around 200kb each, which means I can store thousands in my online photo albums...

Nikons always tend to have really good image quality - I used a 2mp sony cybershot and it was really bad which is funny because my camera phone is a 2mp sony ericsson (K750i in anyone is interested) and takes nice pictures.

Files sizes are good - my cameraphone stores at around 400kb-500kb so with a 1gb card I never run out for space.

From my other cameras I have over 20GB of files - I need to use a sperate hard disc to store them but with most of them being 5MB upward in size its not hard to imagine.

For holiday snaps, a compact is always the best way to go, there is nothing worse than having to carry a large camera when a small camera will meet your needs.

Whatever you do, don't buy a Kodak. My new camera is a Sony Cybershot and my next one will be too. I believe their cameras start from a tad over £130. But it'd be well worth it.
