Title: Yeaton Peverey Hall
Description: anyone know anything about it?

willow - September 17, 2005 09:53 PM (GMT)
Hi Ive been trying to research Yeaton peverey hall, nr shrewsbury.

I used to live in Myddle until 1991 and as a teenager myself and a few friends discovered the hall and used to bike there every week.

It was empty and in need of restoration but we loved exploring the place, it is a beautiful building but very mysterious. I was hooked

Until some kids from Baschurch got wind of it and camped out there for the night, caused havoc and did a lot of damage and the police were involved.

The house was subsequently boarded up and security cameras put up so it spoilt it for us who only liked to explore and love the place.

I was just wondering if anyone has been there lately or has any information about it?

Thanks Emma

i think sir Offley Wakeman of Rorrington had it built - possibly designed by H.E.Milner who designed Stokesay Court.

it was later used as a school(st margarets?) hope this is of some use.

Thanks, I knew Sir Offley Wakeman had it built, and it was designed by Sir Aston Webb, H.E Milner did the landscaping. Thanks for the school info, I never thought anyone would reply!! :)

Built in the early 1890's of only the very best materials, choice English oak for the half-timbering,green Westmorland slate for the roofs and red sandstone from the Triassic beds at Boreatton.

Neo-Jacobean in style with a distinct lack of symmetry.

Some interior rooms have cedar panelling whilst most have moulded and enriched plastered ceilings.

There is a private family chapel.

The Wakemans found it too big and draughty so they built a more manageable sized house in the grounds.

it was used as a school for 30 years until 1971 - with 100 pupils.

Wow, thanks!! Ive looked and looked online and not found much. Could you tell me where you found that info please?

I was dumbstruck when I saw the private chapel part as that was the whole reason we went there in the first place.

We were told this ghost story that some kids had gone there years ago and books had started flying round the chapel.

We never found that chapel, we were under the impression it was built into the house itself, maybe its not.

I really love that old place, its a shame it was left empty for so long.

it's from a book - "Wildings of Shrewsbury"
the book also contains a picture - one of 3 postcards that Wildings issued of the hall.

the Shropshire Magazine had a small article in August 1971 telling how the school had closed and the hall was now available for lease. 3 pictures accompanied the article.

apri 1991 shropshire magazine had a detail of a watercolour of Y.P. seen through the gates.
this watercolour was by alexander cresswell and is in his book"the silent houses of britain" published in 91 by macdonald.

the magazine says that the hall has been empty for 20 years and was beleived to now be owned by the sue ryder foundation.

Wow you are a fountain of knowledge!! :D

Do you know how i could get access to any of those magazines?, it would probably mean a trip to the library i suppose.

I managed to find a bit of info on friends reunited from some ex pupils of the hall, its all very interesting.

I also missed out on a postcard on ebay of the hall, someone from USA bought it :(

hello again,

Shropshire Archives have got copies of all the Shropshire Magazines and they will photocopy anything you want for 20p a sheet.

http://www.shropshire.gov.uk/archives.nsf

if you ask them they might do it and post them to you.

I think the july 1968 issue has an article about the smaller house that the Wakemans had built

good luck

Hi Emma, strange this. I was sniffing about the net seeing what I could find about the old manor, not a lot but I came across this board and your post. I was actually looking for ghostly stories about the place, because like you I used to go down there with my mates, fantastic place. But we saw and heard some weird stuff down there, on four different occassions and the last time was enough for me not to go back there again(If you knew me you'd know I don't scare easily).
I actually slept in there twice, and used to go in to the chapel which was on the ground floor near the main staircase, there was evidence of an ouiji board left on the floor the first time we went in there  .
One of my old mates had some video footage of the interior, don't know if he still has it but it'd be interesting to find out.
BTW it wasn't us that smashed the place up.
Good luck with your research.

I dont believe it!! I have searched the net high and low looking for stuff about the place, this place has been of most help (thanks to s.g.d ;) ). I recently found out that its open to the public on a few days a year and it is currently grant maintained.
Ive also been looking for ghost stories on the place and funny enough the last time i went there it was enough for me to not go back - very scary!
I cant believe we missed the chapel but if i remember rightly the area by the main staircase was so dark we were scared to venture in a few rooms.
You must be mad to sleep there, I would last 5 minutes! I hope you dont mind but Ive sent you a private message about this post.

Don't mind PM's, haven't got time to write much, off to work shortly.
The chapel was pitch black inside even in the daylight hours, creepers had grown over the windows concealing them completely. There were a couple of rows of pews and no door handle on the inside, so if one of your mates shut you in you couldn't get out. As for kipping there, I suppose we were a bit mad.
First time we went there was to scare another group of lads we had heard were stopping the night. We got there around midnight and met them on their way out terrified, a couple left and we talked the rest in to going back in.

It seems we were going there around the same time then. I used to go to Corbet school too, I might even know you.

Im glad I never found the chapel then because there was always a big gang of us, mostly lads, and they were the sort that would lock you in :o

Here is the link to the info I found on the hall, you can visit but have to make an appointment. To me it wouldnt be the same, although id love to go back for a look.

If you met them coming out terrified that would be enough for me not to go in.

Sorry been a bit busy lately. Shame about the post card. Had a word with my old mate, he thinks he's still got that video but he's not sure where as he's moved about 6 times, although he assures me he hasn't throw it away. Will keep you posted. Oh what year did you leave Corbet, can't remember an Emma from Middle.

Hi Yeah keep me posted on that, it would be interesting to know what its like. I left Corbet in the 4th year in 1994, when my Mum decided to move back to Welshpool. Perhaps ypu are a bit older than me.
