Roads in Shrewsbury's West End will be closed to traffic on Saturdays if plans for a street market featuring 90 traders gets the go-ahead.

LSD Promotions, which runs the town's indoor market, wants to transform Claremont Street, Mardol and a section of Rous Hill into a lively street market.

It will run from 9am to 4pm on Saturdays.

The proposal includes closing the relevant roads to traffic while the market is up and running, but the stalls will be arranged in single file to allow access for emergency vehicles.

The possibility of outdoor tables and chairs to create a continental atmosphere will also be looked at.

Councillor David Roberts, portfolio holder, said: "I fully support this innovative idea which will bring customers in from far and wide and will help rejuvenate the West End."

The issue is to be discussed at a cabinet meeting on Monday.

Would it not be better for the proposed outdoor market to be held in the Square?

The continental style market was very good and there's plenty of space since they ruthlessly removed the trees

It would also save having to close roads etc...

What do you think? do you agree the square would be a better location?

Last night Shrewsbury council in their wisdom approved for the Saturday street market in Shrewsbury to get the go-ahead in a bid to boost trade in the town's West End.

The 90-stall market, will be run by LSD Promotions, who also runs the Harlescott Sunday Market.

The outdoor market will stretch along the length of Claremont Street, Mardol and part of Roushill, closing the roads to traffic on Saturdays between 6am and 6pm.

Councillor David Roberts, portfolio holder for markets, said it had been a long-term wish of the council to have a street market in the town.

If its been a long-term wish then why has it not been done before?

I still think the Square would have been a better place for the market if we have to have another. So we are going to have a road closed every Saturday and the Square standing empty GREAT!!

I think Shrewsbury is going to have a market overkill, the main general market, a Saturday market and the Sunday market can they all survive?
