Title: That New Facebook Group
Town_Walls - June 14, 2010 11:13 PM (GMT)
I see that the peasantry have started up a
new Facebook group to complain that town centre residents have dared to have an opinion on anything.
It seems that, if you are unfortunate enough to live within the river loop, you just have to put up with noise from the Quarry, plus all the other delights that the town centre offers - puke all over the pavements, urinating in doorways, gaggles of tarty girls, cafe owners who think they have a God-given right to spread their tables all over narrow pavements and all the rest of the stuff that we're supposed just to accept.
I wouldn't mind if they were defending decent music at the Quarry - but who have we had in the last few years? Lulu, Rick Astley, Belinda Carlisle, T'Pau, plus that whiny witch who drones on about bicycles in Beijing.
Peter Gilbert - June 15, 2010 05:36 AM (GMT)
Any houses for sale there?
Love the Tarty girls bit and the free entertainment, but being serious public order is a problem and nobody should have to have their lives made hell because of it.Regarding the tables from the cafe,s well personally I think on a summer day they add atmosphere and tranquility I must admit I detest the smoking in the town centre, when I visit on a nice day I love to buy a sandwich or a sushi from m+s and sit down to enjoy it on a bench you can guarentee some ignoramous always plonks themselves down next to me and lights up now that I do find annoying.

Hi Just to be devil's advocate .... Town Walls you and your fellow residents chose to live within the river loop nobody forced you....
If the concerts etc are banned, how do you suggest the council makes money and attract people to the town. We need money in the coffers and tills to keep our town going,if we are not careful people will drift away to other towns for entertainment and Shrewsbury will have more empty shops.. :(

I've moved away from the town centre, but I still reserve the right to grumble and moan. Possibly I should get a new username!
As for attracting visitors to the town, I think we should really concentrate on attracting Saga Tours, rather than anything else. Anyone younger is asking for trouble.

Shrewsbury isn't called the 'Graveyard of Ambition' for nothing!
Geoffum2 - June 15, 2010 11:25 PM (GMT)
No need to insult Katie Melua either

I think really the loopy people have got nothing better to do regarding 'noisey performers' They have pressured the only council in the country, SABC/SCC who slaps a decibel restriction on performers who come here. Loopy Nimby mania and almost snobbery if you ask me. I think your out voted here TW. Peasants rule!!
BRING ON THE QUO!!

I agree.
I also get the impression that some of the people who complain about the residents association should reveal their motives. Perhaps they stand to make money from more concerts? Just a thought...

ah get over it!
we dont want shrewsbury to be famous for aga tours! god forbid
it needs something to liven it up and the quarry concerts are great for that. they arent even that rowdy just good fun for many people.
keep em going i say#!

Yes well obviously Shrewsbury town is an exclusive reserve for white middle class over 50's what do you expect? Anywhere young people gather for a good time they are hassled criminalised and made to feel unwelcome. They should have proper gigs with proper bands and a rave now and then to liven the place up a bit ! So what if there is a bit of mess afterwards it can be cleaned up,why is Shrewsbury so scared of people having a good time? Because the "youth" scare them to death, and its getting worse instead of better! We are becoming a society scared of our own children and that is sad to see. I,m pushing 50 now but was a punk in 77 and I can remember how we felt unconnected and apart from society and we are now making the problem worse and worse by clamping down on any signs of exuberance or noise! Poor buggers dont stand a chance now what with cctv and asbos, first sign of anything they are jumped on by enthusiastic coppers or community wardens and nicked! I think Shrewsbury is a lovely town and its a shame bit of music and a bit of colour is sooo contraversial, anyway the tarty girls look great to me! Can only wish I was 17 again! (Sighs wistfully!)

Town Wall's opening comment on this topic is without doubt the most appaling thing I have read on here.
The 'Peasantry' !!!!???? Who might these people be ? Persons TW obviously considers unworthy of having an opinion, especially if it differs.
I have lived in City Centres, Town Centres ( including Shrewsbury ) and various rural locations, and have never met anyone before who didn't understand that living in an urban environment involved more hustle, bustle and noise. For many, that is the whole point of living there.
I have no issue with the STCRA representing their own views, but it has to remembered that every ratepayer in the town and it's suburbs pay for the upkeep of the Quarry, and it is not just the 'back garden' for a self-select few.
It was also seem that TW has an issue with the choice of acts that play there. So presumably, acts that meet with 'almighty approval' would be permitted ? Perhaps TW could provide us with a list of artists that are deemed acceptable, and the 'peasantry' could pick from those.
If these concerts happened every summer weekend, I could understand. As it is, it just strikes me as arrogant, selfish and sad.

Coming so soon after a weekend when the whole town was treated to the amplified yowl of some geriatric mockney belting out "YOU'RE INDESTRUCTI-BUBBLE!" for about three hours without stopping, you're right that I don't think the current choice of acts is up to much.
Who have been the highlights of recent years? Rick Astley and Lulu. I'm surprised the X Factor Rejects Tour has not stopped by.
I really don't understand why the Quarry has to be used for concerts (or circuses, or fairs, or flower shows) at all. It's a very pleasant open space which is at its best on a sunny afternoon when it's packed with children playing, people walking dogs, office workers eating lunch, college students gathering and playing football, older people and visitors enjoying the Dingle.
Of course, in the unlikely event that Blur were to play the Quarry, I might re-consider.

Yes, it is :ph43r: I live in a bungalow, though. No steps.
MrKaplan - July 12, 2010 10:09 PM (GMT)
Most of the acts that perform in the Quarry aren't my cup of tea either, but that's the whole point. The Quarry is for the many, not just the select few. Those concerts attract thousands of ticket buyers, far more than could be accommodated by that ugly wooden shed over the river.
I guess it's used for concerts, fairs, circuses etc because it's a large, open piece of public land with easy access. Even your loathed 'peasantry' can get there. I seriously doubt that Shrewsbury is alone in using it's public parks for these reasons. I have suspicion that it's the sort of thing they're supposed to be used for.
Incidentally, I'm with you on the 'Blur' issue.
Town_Walls - July 13, 2010 11:46 PM (GMT)
The 'peasantry' thing was tongue in cheek. I don't despise anyone. Saying that, I'm not all that fond of quite a lot of our new government, but I didn't like the last ones much either.
Still annoyed that I didn't get round to buying tickets for Blur in Hyde Park last year until it was too late (and I did consider paying a fortune to get some off Ebay, until my inner-Scrooge stopped me). Maybe we'll get Rammstein in the Quarry next year.
MrKaplan - July 14, 2010 01:01 PM (GMT)
I assume you don't need me to tell you that both Blur and Rammstein would want to be FAR louder than any of the concerts held thus far. The thought that Rammstein could be drowned out by Katie Melua is too comical to consider.
Still awaiting your full list of 'allowable' performers.

I think Town Walls was being ironic in his opening post. ;)

I see in the Chronicle this week the STCRA have embarked on a PR exercise in order to show that they have not stifled Shrewsbury, (apparently Tescos according to some folk have done that!!!) and how they have worked over many years to inprove the town.
Their latest whizz was to get traffic signs put up in the town to reduce speeds.
Sadly for them Eric Pickles has just announced that there is to much signage, especially in attractive tourist towns and it must go. OOps STCRA!
Actually, weren't the expensive and attractive cobbles supposed to slow the traffic?
I know when they took them up I went on a Ghost Talk with a load of 11 years olds and it was a wonder we didn't all end up ghosts after nearly being mown down several times. The whole point of those walks is to cross roads frequently in the town whist building up imagery of the stories. It doesn't really work when you are herding a large group of excitable kids v traffic.
Town_Walls - September 6, 2010 06:17 PM (GMT)
Yes, I chuckled over STCRA's public relations extravaganza in The Chronicle last week. My favourite bit was when they earnestly described how they were making an effort to get down wi da kidz.

What? Cookery demos you mean? I saw one of them in the Fired Earth shop. But I think they moved recently.
