Title: Election Candidates In Shrewsbury And Atcham

Town_Walls - April 26, 2010 07:18 PM (GMT)
Now that leaflets from all the parties have dropped through my letterbox, and two of the candidates have started a bidding war, who are our election choices here in Shrewsbury and Atcham? Going on the content of the leaflets, here we are

1. Daniel Kawczynski (Conservative). I'm invited to 'trust Daniel for his committment passion and vision'. There's a number of photos of him looking awkward while dealing with the pax and three utterly banal confections of corporate-speak listed under the heading '3 positive reasons to vote for Daniel Kawczynski'. Apparently, he is 'known as "Mr Shrewsbury" in parliament', which seems a little odd, since I'm not entirely sure that he's ever been to the place.

2. Charles West (Lib Dem). Lots of letters from this one. Quite amusingly aggressive leaflets, in which he tries to give the impression that he would be a tough man of the people, despite looking like the bearded old fogey that I'm told he is. Embarrassingly bad bar chart following the usual 'Can't win here!' pattern of the Liberals.

3. Jon Tandy (Labour). Bandwagon-jumping postman. A photo of him standing next to Gordon Brown achieves the rare feat of making Brown's physical appearance seem vaguely normal. Plus he's misspelt 'Govenments' before going on to talk about improving education standards. But the leaflet does feature a nice picture of some bungalows.

4. Peter Lewis (UKIP). Nice little potted biography which proudly includes his 11+ results. We are urged to vote UKIP 'for town and country', which he has helpfully illustrated with a photo of Wyle Cop and a photo of the windmill at Asterley (which apparently he owns). Gives URL of his blog, which is mostly about him ranting against 'global warmists' and ranting in favour of homeopathy. Nutcase.

5. James Whittall (BNP). Badly photoshopped front cover with cropping and angles all wrong. Far too many capital letters scattered about the place, like a bad posting on the BBC's 'Have Your Say' website. Not sure what message the photo of the family group on the back cover is meant to convey, given that the 'mother' is clearly about 20 years older than the 'father', and the children look nothing like either of them.

6. Alan Whittaker (Greens). Mostly generic Green leaflet, with a painfully politically correct mix of ethnicities and classes. Lots of women posing as doctors, construction workers, lumberjacks, etc. Another leaflet where some proof-reading could have worked wonders.

7. James Gollins (Impact Party). No longer the Albion Party, presumably because a newly-promoted West Brom no longer need his help, this is the bloke with fifteen chins who puts up his mis-spelt slogans in the windows of the coach offices by the station. Bit of a trainspotter, given that a lot of the 9-point text on the front of his leaflet is about upgrading the Channel Tunnel to Birkenhead via Shrewsbury railway line. This is another one who makes grammatical errors while outlining his education policies. Are there no more pubs left in town for this man to bore?

Now I'm an undecided swing voter, and I'm also part of the yoof of today, but I don't relish the thought of any of this lot getting in.

There is always the "none of the above" lot to think of......do we need these people to represent us any more ? It seems we vote habitually for "StrictlyCome X Factor Celebrity Brother " why not do away with the lot of 'em and we'll do it via our red buttons and mobiles etc ?
