Charles Darwin - February 12, 2010 03:42 PM (GMT)
They have a new commemoration to you in the form of in laymens terms, a pile of old whale bones by the river now. it is made of concrete. It is called Quantum Leap It has taken Shrewsbury this long to commemorate your fame no wonder you moved out!
Happy Birthday Charles

Well there is the small matter of a statue outside the library that has been there over a 100 years! And its still by far the only Darwin memorial worth seeing!
lemon squeezer - February 12, 2010 06:18 PM (GMT)
And Darwin found it difficult to express new concepts all those years ago!
I feel sure that he would be disappointed that little has changed were he here today. Regarding Shrewsbury he would probably not be entirely surprised.
Your views are subjective trickytrees other opinions differ and concrete is an amazing material.

Apologies trickytrees I should have made my point to CD
Concrete is also used for bridges, floors, kitchen work surfaces, buildings some of which are now listed, was invented originally by the Romans and disliked by the Victorians who saw it as pagan and sensual as it can take any form and therefore in their view should always be covered up. :D

My dear person did I not say it was made of concrete, did I in any way criticise this material? I stated it was made of concrete. I may add that the construction by the Welsh bridge is not to my liking. Everyone is entitled to their opinion surely?
trickytrees - February 14, 2010 01:12 PM (GMT)
What construction by the English Bridge is that then?

We went to see the comedy "The Beagle has Landed" last night at the OPO.
It was funny and only a pity that more people weren't there.
The Chronicle stated towards the beginning of the paper it was on Friday night and towards the end of their paper that it was on Saturday night!
Anyway we took a stroll around after and found ourselves near Theatre Severn . This looked slightly better at night as the cheap nasty fake ashlar stone cladding is not visible.
The sculpture is looking rather better now the filled in area is not white and the landscaping has been started. I think it is going to be quite successful but would prefer the adjacent large plane tree to be removed and something less dominent in it's place.
I thought you were charming last night Charles!

A statue of Darwin at work on his theory would have worked better.

There is a statue of a young Darwin at Shrewsbury school.

Abstract sculpture is far more interesting and speaks to more people than statues. As we have Darwin immortalised when old at the library and young at Shrewsbury School even though he did not like the place, this controversial representation of his work is really apt IMHO.
Wellingtonian - February 16, 2010 12:15 PM (GMT)
Yeah, but I was thinking of Darwin astride a Tortoise. That kind of thing! ;)
lemon squeezer - February 16, 2010 11:17 PM (GMT)
That's just too controversial for Shropshire Wellingtonian!
Anyway the sheep would get jealous. :P
Wellingtonian - February 17, 2010 11:02 AM (GMT)
Hey, Lemon Squeezer! I have it!
Darwin sat on a chair surrounded by some fish, some sheep, a tortoise or two, some bunnies, and the plaque could say: "Evolution - It's not just for Christmas!"
