Title: Tv Trickery
Description: Digital Reception scam

Andy Cooke - September 25, 2009 08:47 AM (GMT)
I was speaking to a engineer yesterday discussing the newish digital service. He told me that when Wrekins analogue transmitters are switched off (2011) digital signals will be turned up to full power( ten times higher than now) and most people should be able to recieve a good signal from a set top aerial, the same applies to all UK terrestrial digital transmitters. So much from the scam during the last few years by the TV aerial companies conning us into purchasing somewhat elaborate new aerials with signal boosters attached. Wonder what the next scam will be, three aerials for '3D' TV?

Its quite funny the number of new aerial's going up around by me.

There's one company in Shrewsbury that have not got a clue and are telling customers all sorts, I know at least two people who have used them and been scammed.

Yes, some antenna will need replacing as they are for older bands, but in the majority of cases you will be perfectly fine. If you use an indoor aerial it could be a matter of moving it slightly and you will have a perfect picture.

If you are in Shrewsbury have a look around, one lazy installer is placing aerial's at window height and they are all the same make, which is not at all suitable for our strong signal area.

Just be warned...

Well, this depends on the type of TV you have.

We have one which will need a digibox, and two that will not. One of which is even HD ready! Or so it said on the box!

Yes you will, unless you have a HD ready TV which has built in Freesat, then you just need to connect it to a dish.

The HD options available are :
- HD Freeview
- HD Freesat
- HD SKY
- HD Virgin Media (Telford locations only)

It's all a mess at the moment, most people have SKY HD, Freesat is popular for free HD although it only has two HD channels BBC HD and ITV HD (This is via red button) the rest are SD.

HD Freeview is only just launching and not live in Shropshire yet and finally Virgin Media is only available in parts of Telford.

A HD ready TV normally means it has an HDMI socket.

Confused, you bet...

And Virgin Media (aka Telepest/TeleWest) is only available in certain fairly limited locations in Telford. They haven't laid cables at any of the new housing developments, private or social housing.

Mind you, when I used their service, they were &%$£, always breaking down.
