trickytrees - September 16, 2009 07:27 PM (GMT)
With winter round the corner it would be interesting to hear about good deals on power,or for that matter companies not to go to! Im on N power, both gas & electricity, not signed up to direct debit yet though to get the discout!

I've been looking at our useage today, we have used less gas and electricity in 2009 compared to last year.
As we are almost into October and still not put the heating on I'm quite pleased. Apart from the gas combi-boiler everything else in the house is electric.
We are currently with British Gas, price fixed until 2011, but I think its always good to shop around.

We moved from a well-maintained 1930 semi-detached house with gas central heating to a new house built to the latest insulation standards with the latest condensing boiler.
To our shock -and joy!- we found that the combined gas and electricity bill for the quarter was not much more than we paid for a month's gas bill at our old house! :o

Just signed up to this, were you suprised with the amount of electric you were using?
Has it made you switch items on standby off?
Hopefully, my energy smart meter should arrive tomorrow or early next week.

Yes Chris you will certainly be watching it like a hawk, and yes it certainly draws your attention to the ammount of electric you use during the day/week/month,the online graph is realy interesting.

You will probably have to give them a reminder or two,but make sure you use a energy smart number. One call centre operator told me its like two different companies running alongside each other, but in fairness i have found them to be quick and very helpful.

Energy smart meter arrived on Thursday, since then I’m amazed at how much is being used.
Since midnight and its now 4.07pm £1.63 has been used today.
Top contributors to the high usage are (obviously):
- Kettle
- Electric Shower
- Vacuum Cleaner
So less hot drinks, quicker showers and less cleaning is called for :)
