Plans for the proposed incinerator at Battlefield are being unveiled this week...
http://www.shropshirestar.com/2009/01/15/i...safe-says-boss/I'm not against the building of waste incinerators - I'd much prefer rubbish to be burned than dumped in the countryside or at sea - and this one will also produce electricity which is of course a plus - but the exact location of the proposed Battlefield one is not brilliant.
The reason it being planned for here is because the site is adjacent to the existing recycling centre on Vanguard Way. However, whilst the incinerator might be on an edge-of-town site at the moment, in 20 years it won't be. To the north a food enterprise park is under construction - do food companies really want their premises right next to such a facility? To the northeast, on the other side of the railway line, the land will likely be used for more new housing along Battlefield Road. These houses, as well as the existing houses in Battlefield village, will be right under the chimney in the direction of the prevailing wind. Not brilliant.
Two far better sites jump to mind for the incinerator - the former beet factory at Allscott and the Buildwas Power Station. Here however petty local politics comes into play. Allscott is in Telford and Wrekin Borough and whilst the power station is in our borough, the prevailing wind is towards Telford. It would be likely that in both cases Telford and Wrekin Council would object. None-the-less these two sites will need thinking about in the near future, with Allscott now vacant and Buildwas to close in 2015. Better to put industry or waste disposal in these locations than at Battlefield in my opinion.
