Title: Pavements ?

As all law abiding people know it is against the law to cycle on a footpath but Shrewsbury council encourage the practice !! Check out the markings on the new cycle/footpath on Telford way on both sides Arrows indicate cycles can go on the cycle way and the footpath,so who pays the fine if the police decide to prosecute a cyclist for cycling on a footpath?

Well, if the footpath has also been designated as a cycle way then, not too surprisingly, it's fine for bikes to use it.

As for the markings on Telford Way, it's because on the bridge itself the cycle path drops down to the road, and perhaps its not such a good idea for the young/old/those with shopping to be cycling on the cycle lane at this point. Hence allowing, for that short stretch over the Severn, for cyclists to use the footpath.

Really, cynicism wins over common sense once again.

The Police won't. The new cycle arrangements (which are great, BTW) are one of the early achievements of the Cycling Town initiative.

There is a similar arrangement on Hazeldine Way on the Reabrook bridge. Given that there is not a huge amount of pedestrian or cycle traffic at any one time, it seems to work OK. What's wrong with using a bit of common sense - if there are pedestrians, get off your bike and walk, if there are no pedestrians, proceed with caution.

The bike situation is like a lot of things if people were considerate we would not need rules which can be counter productive.
You see young people cycling like the wind past old people who can easily be seriously injured by even a small fall but with common sense applied by all cycling on pavements can be a forgivable act. Soft body road users are so vunerable whether pedestrians or cyclists.
Dog fouling is another case in point where just removing the dirt somewhere it can deteriorate naturally is better for the environment than putting it in plastic bags but again consideration for other people is the main issue.
