Description:

Hello, my partner and I are planning to move to Shrewsbury before the end of the year. I'm from Yorkshire originally and he's a Londoner, innit.

So.... how should one say Shrewsbury? Shroooooze-berry or Shrohhhhhs-berry? Or neither of the above?

Same for Meole Brace. Is it Mell Brace?

Please, no teasing the foreigner by giving her misleading answers :)

Welcome. Your second question is easy to answer - Meal Brace.

People have argued about how the name of the town should be pronounced for ages. Go to page 9 and you'll find 60 replies to the question. Just to complicate matters, some say Shoes-bury or Shoes-brie (no kidding).

Thank you, Old Codger -- I shall indeed look at page 9!

Another one is Coton Hill - it is not pronounced "cotton" but "co-ton". And if you're going out Bridgnorth way (note - no "e"!) the village of Cound is pronounced "cund".

Thanks, Proud Salopian. I read the first few pages of the thread to which Old Codger referred. I realised that however I pronounce the name of the town, I'd please some people and disgust others! :)

Anyway, we might not be moving to Shrewsbury after all, as the person buying our house pulled out just before exchange of contract! Grrr

Well you might be glad they did because Shrewsbury is going greyer than John Major! <_<

First we have a theatre that should get an award for the most ugly new building in Britain and also sadly cost loadsa money too because it has been built on such a constrained, awkward and inefficient site.

Now we are going to build an inadequate college also on a constrained, inefficient and awkward site.

As an Expat of Shrewsbury I know this argument has gone on for years, even to the extent of dividing families.

I was born north of the river an pronounce it Shroosbury.

My sister was born south of the river and insists that it is Shroesbury, but then my sister is a snob!!

Get my point?
