Rant warning .

On top of excessive fines for minor parking misdemeanours, I read that your local caring council can now fine you up to £110 on the spot for putting your bin out the night before collection day or leaving the lid ajar.

You can have a night on the town, get drunk, resist arrest and be given a lift to the police station where you will have a bed for the night and breakfast in the morning. As long as you aren't too aggressive, apologise and they can't be bothered with the paperwork, then, likely as not, you'll be sent home and told not to do it again. Even if charged with acting in a disorderly manner the fine is only £80 which, considering that you had bed and breakfast for free, is excellent value. Grrr

I hadn't heard the bit about being fined for putting out your bin the night before - could you post the link? It sounds pretty excessive.

On a related note (although you haven't made this point), a lot of people have been saying on other forums that they particularly resent this because they see regular refuse collection as about the only thing that they get in return for paying their council tax.

See, for example, some of the comments in the Shropshire Star.

Obviously council tax pays for other things (roads, schools, police and fire service being some of the major items that come to mind), but many people don't see this (or choose to ignore this).

What does Proud Salopian (in particular), as someone who has good experience of local government, and who always takes a thoughtful perspective on issues, think of this attitude?

Hello, been away a while but kept looking. I can think of one thing to say about councils, rubbish collections, central and local government and it ends with piss-up in a brewery

Going back to the subject of rubbish who would of thought that "rubbish mining" for plastics and other materials dumped in the 80s may take place in the near future. The Times tuesday 12 august page 17
